Ortiz has 46 right now and Howard has 44. Could one or both get to 60?

And if they do, will they be bombarded with steroid allegations?

To clarify: I personally don't believe Ortiz or Howard is using steroids, I was just wondering if allegations might come up from others.

There's only about a month left in the season, so both of them would have to hit one pretty much every other game, while possible, it's not probable. And yes, they both will go over 50 and I'm sure there will be some allegations, that's how it's gonna be with anyone putting up those kind of power numbers, but with Howard, he has 0 stolen bases so you would think he would be getting extra speed to if he was on something, so maybe there won't be too much brought up for him since he did enter the league just as big as he is now.

I think Ortiz can do it provided that this injury with Manny Ramirez isn't serious and Ramirez can back him up in the lineup; otherwise, teams are going to walk Ortiz; they're not stupid (as it is they do it now if the situation is even remotely close). With Howard, he's missing that person in the lineup to back him up, but he does play in the NL which is a much weaker league for pitchers. I think he'll get awfully close but miss out, 58 or so. Ortiz I see hitting 60 or 61.

As for the steroid allegations, that's tough. In my biased opinion (I love both of them) they seem clean to me. In today's age of steroid awareness, increased testing, and rumor mills spreading like wildfire, neither of their names have ever been linked to anything. That's a good start when you consider that even Tom Brady was questioned regarding his involvement with a trainer when his name showed up on a phone record (it turned out the two spoke once but never met). Will there be allegations? Probably, just on the basis that we're at a stage in the post-steroid era where anyone's name can come into question. Will the allegations ever pick up any steam? I doubt it. These are just two guys with immense talent that can really mash the ball, and if you've ever watched them together, it's uncanny how similar they are in their approach, their swing, their personality, etc. Ortiz is the face of the game right now, and Howard is the future.

The most home runs ever hit in the month of September is 17. So Howard would have to have a historic September to reach 60. Ortiz would have to have an outstanding month.

It will also depend upon whether their teams continue to play meaningful games. Or they fall out of playoff contention, they may be rested more.

I give Ortiz a 10% chance, and Howard near zero.

David Ortiz could easily make 60, where as Ryan Howard would flirt with it. There will definatley be steriod allegations, becuase the last few people to hit 60 were all juiced up. But there is no way ortiz is on steriods, he just can flat out play ball.

there are now 35 games left in the season... and papi still needs 14 homers.. i was thinking about this yesterday and thought it to be a distinct possiblity

he hits a homer once every 2.76 games so with 35 games left he should hit 12-13 more mathematically.. leaving him just short of 60.. but all he needs is a couple 2-3 homer games and hell probably get it

i doubt howard will get it though

They have a shot of making 60 home runs but they will have to average 4 home runs a week. If they do make 60, they will not be given the barry bonds treatment. The only steroid david ortiz is rice and beans and chuleta!!

I think David Ortiz will get 60 homers and Ryan Howard will only get about 55.
If they do get 60 homers than people will accuse them of taking steriods, especially because so many sports have bought suspension there juicing.

They both could if they hustle, and absolutly they will be bomborded in steroid allegations. I really dont think anyone can beat Roger Maris's record of 61 home runs in 1961 without steroids.

i think low 50s is the best you're going to see. both are hitting at a torrid pace and if the steroid accusations were going to fly they would have come by now.
besides, most 'roid pumpers don't have a fat beer belly like ortiz!

they might have a chance but, they both slowed down a lot right now. david ortiz is being suspected taking hgh testasterone, so hes a cheater, alfonso soriano has a chance for 50 homers
