How does one apply or get invited to own the card?

I think you have to be Super-Rich, and American Express approaches you about it, not vice-versa. It's kind of one of those "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" things.
I expect to never SEE one, much less have one!

The American Express Black Card is an exclusive invitation only credit card offered to existing AMex cardholders who charge more than $250,000 annually. That is why many celebs have them and brag about them in their music and flash them on tv.

I saw two in two years working as a hotel receptionist in London. It's one of those "don't call us we'll call you" credit cards.

you must spend at least 250k over a 12 month period with them on any card. They will contact you about it.
