The french were asked to lead and offered a whooping 400 troops for Lebanon. Italy offered 3000 and offered to lead. The french come back whining about wanting to lead and up their number to all of 2000.
I say the french couldn't follow a locomotive down a railroad track if it was down hill and they were attached. Anybody think the french are brave, heroic leaders?

It's simply geo-politic. The French have owned Lebanon and think that the Italians have nothing to do in "their" historic backyard.
Just as the USA would not be pleased when the Russians would lead a UN mission in fe. Haiti.
About brave heroic leaders : they have had brave heroic leaders (fe. a lot of generals under Napoleon (cowards didn't last long with him, d'Artagnan (who has really existed), ...).
And I think there are still good officers with the French.
Biggest problem is not the army but the politicians. Their actual leaders aren't any more as fe. De Gaul (one big pain in the ... for every other nation, but at least he had guts).
About the trees at the side of the road. It was Napoleon who ordered it for its troops. Funny is indead that when the trees where fullgrown, the Germans indeed had some benefits with it for shade and to shelter agains airplanes ;-)

This is going to conjure up all the jokes about the surrender-monkey French back during the lead-in to the Iraq war. Might as well tell you my personal favorite: Why do the French plant trees by the side of the road? Because the German Army likes to march in the shade.

There are heroic leaders in every nation. There are brave soldiers in every country. There is no need to compare for everyone of them are putting their life in danger for their country. There are as many on both sides of a war, no matter where! Politicians get the credit for a lot of bravery that belong to the ordinary military people who give their life, therefore extraordinary as compared to those who send them to fight their battles while they remain safe in their showy suits in their office if not on vacation somewhere! I feel sad for Lebanon and those countries at war for their people who perish are the real heroes
