The phrasing of your question can easily be perceived as if you were making a judgmental and negative commentary on Black Americans. However, I choose to believe that it's just the word choice and not your personal belief that all Blacks mispronounce words. Black Americans, just like any other race of people (ethnic or otherwise), run the gamut in terms of their ability (or lack thereof) to speak proper mainstream American English. The variables, as to why the people you have met, are numerous and education is not the only logical explanation. People on the East coast think Californians sound "funny". People from Virginia, St. Louis, Boston and Los Angeles sound "funny" to one another-regional dialects, newness to the country, the quality of education etc....could all account for why someone speaks the way they do. You may also consider some of these people may be fully capable of communicating at a level that you deem sufficient and may simply be choosing not to do so, also for a variety of reasons.

Depends on if the person is educated or not, and it also depends on geographical location. It is not just African Americans hon'. I am African American, and I was born and raised in Virginia, but I've been in advanced english courses, I have good speaking skills, so does everyone in my family(who isn't from the deep South). You really must do away with that thinking though, because I've lived around whites who really had bad grammar.

Let's reverse that question.. How come all white southerners can't pronounce words correctly? Not a very fair question is it? They're both stereotypical and are a product of you not knowing what you are talking about, let alone asking.

Down here 'round these parts in the south be we red, yellow, black, or white we ain't too good at pronouncing all our words to the standards of someone from say, NY, but does that mean we ain't sayin our words right? By whose standards are you judging the way people pronounce words?
