All WiFi equipment uses vertical polarization, so your antennae should also be in the vertical orientation. Indoors there is typically so much reflection and multipath, sometimes it almost doesn't matter which way you point them. Also, if your router or access point has two antennae, make sure they are BOTH in the same position. Some people point them in opposite 45-degree positions but this will not help, because you're really only talking to one of the two antennae at any given time. The reason there are two is to mitigate multipath interference. Typically when your wireless client transmits, the signal is obviously received by both antennae on the AP, so it knows which one of the two got the better reception, even if only by a few nanowatts, and then will use that one for the next transmission.

It should be pointed the way that gives you the best signal. Usually that is vertical, because when horizontal, the body of the router blocks the signal.

It doesn't matter as long as all of the WiFI devices in your apartment have their antennas in the same polarization, but vertical polarization is usually chosen as a matter of convention.
