It was not as hard as I first thought. I custom made a sheet for a twin size bed. here are the directions which I am sure will work for any bed. how much material you get will depend on the size of your bed. the people in the fabric store will be able to telll you the amount.
[1] cut the top and sides separately (5 pieces in all.) measure the length & widthe of the mattress and then added an extra inch on each side.
[2]cut the top of the sheet, that legnth.
[3] measure the depth and width of the top of the mattress and added one inch to each side. I cut two sides that legnth. That would be the shorter sides found at the top and bottom of the mattress.
[4]you then cut 2 long sides the same depth as the sides but the same legnth as the top.
[5]you then stitch all four sides onto the big top piece. Do not join at the corners
I found it easier to add elasstic when the material was not joined at the corners.
[6] finishe the edges with a small turned under seam.
[7] take 1/4 inch elastic. cut it two inches shorter that the legnth of each side. You will have four pieces of elastic.
[8]using the wrong side of the material a little above the edge of the turned under seam, stretch the elastic , sewing with a small zigzag stitch, from end to end. do that on alll four piece. When you have put in all of the elastic, with the material on the wrong side, stitch the side seams together. double stitch before trimming the seam.
[9] once the seams are trimmed, stitch doen the seam from the top to the bottom.
[10] turn the sheet inside out.
Voila a custom made sheet.
Good luck
I hope this helps

The hardest part of sewing a bedsheet is finding fabric wide enough to keep you from sleeping on a seam. Aside from that it is simply edging with elastic and corners cut to fit.
Dharma trading has some 90" wide fabric.

These folks have some even wider for larger beds:

Prewash your fabric to get the shrinkage and sizing out. You will need to measure your bed to determine sizing and placement of corners. If you need to piece the fabric to make it fit your bed, try putting the extra nearer the edge for your comfort while sleeping.
Here are some instructions with pics that might help...

Not hard if you have basic sewing skills. You'll need enough fabric to cover the mattress plus extra tuck in as "80's Trish" said. Finding fabric wide enough is the hard part. Go online & Google a company called Dharma Trading Company. I think they sell extra wide fabric by the yard in their catalog.

I bet it is easier to sew than it is to put on the bed. : )
I would imagine that you would need the deminsions (length, width, depth) of the mattress adding on an inch or so to finish the edges. Sewing on the elastic might be difficult...elastic always gives me trouble. Depending on your skill level it could be more or less difficult. I'd say it would be semi-difficult.

Not too difficult. You can find extra wide fabric (backing fabric) at specialty shops.
