Just like anything else, people are afraid of things they don't understand so they go on the defensive when there is a movement for something that is foreign to them.

Why must the government tell two people how they can live their lives?
How can the government which is supposed to guarantee equal rights for all not, allow two people who are in love receive the same benefits that another class of people receive?
How does gay marriage affect anyone but the two people getting married?
This country was founded on the basis that the government would remain neutral in matters of religion, so with that in mind why does our government allow religious views to shape our policy?
I am sure you are aware that 50 or so years ago interracial marriage was banned in many states, and the arguments against it then are the same the right is using now against gay marriage.
If marriage is indeed a religious institution the government has no business in it.
Bottom line if you are against gay marriage, do not marry anyone who is gay. But MYOB when it comes to others.

Anger comes from fear, hurt, and frustration. People who oppose the free will of others suffer from one of those things. In this case, it makes them feel afraid because it threatens their unstable schema about what is right and wrong and what marriage is and means. People also feel a false sense of power when they team up and direct hate towards others. The basic workings are, if we're attacking this person, they're not attacking me. So, gay people make an easy target for that kind of hate.
Religious people are quick to say they don't hate or judge, just as the Racist will start out by saying "I'm not a racist but". LOL

Because Marriage in the sense it is understood is a Religious item. the unfortunate side affect is that we have attached so many benefits to marriage but than say only a few people are entitled to those rights. that's unfair. I am a christian and do not believe in "gay" marriages, but I am all for Civil Unions. I think if to people want to be joined in a civil union and be entitled to the same rights as a married couple, their is nothing wrong with that.

Not against gay marriage. Just the same as I am not against giant midgets. See, by definition, a man and a woman can not be a man and a man. Words mean things. If you strip the meaning away from a word, it just becomes equivalent to the ramblings of an insane person.
More examples: Underground Skyscraper, Skinny Fat Man, Well Informed Ignoramus and my favorite = Omnipotent, Omnibenevolent and Omnipresent God.
These things by definition can not exist.

They're scared of change and the Bible has one line it it about not being gay so they use that to bolster their anger caused by their fears over their own unusual urges.
Personally I'm against all marriages. It's an outdated custom in this age of abortion, birth control, and divorce. I don't need a piece of paper, a priest or a government to tell me to stay with one person above all others. I will come and go as I please!
Gays want gay marriage because of the economic benefits, e.g. taxes, loans, inheritance. Not because they're worried their husband will stray or their babies will be bastards.

Religious doctrination, mostly. Even those who weren't and aren't heavily into a religion have been prejudiced by the outspoken religious. Lobbying by big businesses who don't want to have to pay for a gay employee's life-partner's health insurace and are afraid of what more they may have to pay for is marriage is legalized. Innate distrust of something radically new. Those and the fact that being openly gay is relatively new and people are still trying to get used to the fact that there are as many homosexuals as there are.

People will claim that they are against gay marriage for a number of reasons. They will claim that it's unnatural, that it against Christian values, that gays have been granted too much "special treatment", that marriage is a union of two people of the opposite sex aimed at procreation ...etc., etc.
People will hide behind all these great sounding excuses, but in the end...the one great motivator is fear and selfishness. Heterosexuals feel that marriage is their privilege and they do not want to share. They are afraid that they may have a gay couple move in next door to them..."and God knows what it will do to property prices!". They think that if they view being gay as OK and acceptable, their children will all be gay.
Basically, the vast majority of people are not civilized and evolved enough to see past their narrow-minded, bigoted principles. We, as human animals, want to fit in and are afraid of and hostile to anything that doesn't fit into the norm.
When we become more civilized as a society, we will be able to truly accepting of people for who they are rather than for their lifestyle choices. I have said it numerous times in this venue...if two people love each other, they should be allowed to share their union and celebrate it in God. They should be entitled to all the rights and obligations of heterosexual unions.

I think its because some people feel that it goes against nature, which like it or not it does.
Many people who are against it don’t know any Gay/Lesbian people. My parents attended Union years ago for a gay couple.
Who knows maybe one day Gay marriage will be legal, its already legal in many other countries, the UK, Sweden etc

Good question!
I believe most gay marriages last longer than straight marriages.
They go in knowing the hardships that will follow and stand up to it. Straight couples go in knowing the same but divorce at the slightest provocation.

The question was "why", not "who"....Anyway, I think that someone people are against it simply out of fear and ignorance. They are scared of anything that threatens what they believe in, although I can't see how 2 gay people being marrige is a theat to my marriage.
