The Masai drink milk from the cow or goat every day and when they don’t have enough milk, they mix cow’s blood with the milk. In order to get the blood, men shoot an arrow in the jugular vein in the cow’s neck. The blood spills in a gourd and is stopped with a wad of dung and mud applied to the arrow hole.

Probably the same way Huns drank horse blood from the saddle. There's some vein on the neck that can be slit without seriously hurting the animal or hurting its performance that yields enough blood to take a drink. Gross, but in a pinch I guess.

They open a large vein in the cows neck, catch the blood in a dish and close the vein with a paste they make.

They wound the side of their necks with spears, drink the blood, but the puncture wound heals quickly. Or so it seemed on Lowell Thomas.

Oh that sounds terrible. Guess it isn't any difference than someone donating a pint of blood.
