First you should tell us the model of the Printer to be able to help, but, normally you should do the following:
» check where you can open the printer and view its inside
» open the lid / cover
» depending on your printer model, you should have from 1 to 4 cartridges
» checkoout the way its placed in ... as in directions and what is facing the top
» remove the empty cartidge - note that there way be a flip that holds the cartridge in place, make sure you remove it if it exists
Be gentle while removing it - some may require you to move the cartridge towards you to remove it from place
» get the new cartridge and remove the protecting seal from the bottom of it
» place the new ink cartridge in place and make sure that the security lock [flap] is set in the right position - if exists
» If not sure whether the cartridge is placed properly of not, try shaking / pulling it...if it moves with ease, then you didn't install it properly
Hope this helps...
Good Luck!

...Sky pretty much wrote a manual but i think i can add one thing. Some ink cartridges have instuctions to shake them well before inserting. This can help prevent head clogging and provide better color accuracy.

Check your documentation.
Instructions are usually included with the cartridge (or refill).
