For credentials in event planning you really need a degree from a certified Baccalaureate program in HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT. These programs are usually in colleges of family and consumer sciences... I am not sure where you are but there are usually really good programs at your State University.
Besides, that is a fun degree !!!! much more fun than plain ol' mgmt.... besides - you can get certifications in event planning while you are in school and do internships to get real world experience before you graduate !!!

I would look for a college that offers Public Relations.

I think marketing would be a good choice.
