I like a lot of the ideas expressed here, comment cards in the rooms and at the front desk and read the poor reviews, if there are tangible things that are wrong, like bad beds, unclean rooms, the place looks rundown, or the staff is surly, do what you can to address these complaints. If cost is an issue, renovate one room at a time. I know I like clean quiet hotels with pleasant service. Good luck!

I've always wondered if only ticked off patrons post reviews.
Personally, I make it a point to read the review and what the particular problem/complaint was before I decide to use the review or not.
For example, somebody rated a hotel horribly because the day they were there the room card-key system was broken and they needed to go to the front desk to get access to their room. To me, that wasn't a bad review and it shouldn't have been so poorly rated.
I recommend placing comment cards out and putting the good comments on your website.

Dear Lord, please tell me that they have someone else write their advertisements!

If you are getting bad reviews, you should pay attention to the reviews and figure out exactly what you can do to correct the situation. The reviewers aren't making things up, and you need to see if there is a pattern to the reviews. It may be the physical facility, or it may be the employee relations that are at fault. Whichever it is, you can certainly fix it if you want to.
Good luck.

Either address the complaints in the reviews or sue them for libel if what is said is false.
