There really is no such thing as a good American, I would like to offer a comment. It is important that all mankind, from all walks of life. Every Creed,Race,Religion,Gender..etc etc..offer respect and dignity for all that is proper. This includes being responsible for all things which are not always in our control. Our greatest achievements is within ourselves and offering your kindness would sure make living on this big ball of mud allot easier for everyone..

A good, intelligent person that happens to be born in America. I think that this question would've been better if asked what is a good person. If America were split into 3 different countries tomorrow, it would not change the people that live there. Merely there nationality.

A good American is that individual who strives his utmost to achieve financial independence, thus allowing other Americans the freedom from the burden of another's responsibilities.
It is true that it is a difficult task to achieve, but not to strive for it is detrimental to the USA and ultimately could be our downfall.
