I think often times there is a sense that Spanish is used to hide the communication. The thinking goes, if they are using Spanish, they must not want me to know what they are saying...so they must be saying something bad.
That fear and uncertainty lead to anger.

Great question, but I have to say something to those who claim that if Mexicans go to States, they should learn English:
One: America is a whole continent, not only a country. And guess what? Most countries in America are Spanish-speaking!
Two: Did your ancestors learn the Indigenous languages? No, right?
Three: Stop being paranoid. True, it's not nice to be unaware what people are talking about.. Be more intelligent and learn Spanish! That way you'll know if they're talking about you!

Though it is often difficult for non-Spanish speakers to communicate with Spanish speakers, I do not feel that there is anything wrong without being able to speak English. It's really difficult for some people to learn the language and people should just be patient becasue no one is perfect. Many (but not all) Spanish-speakers are here to simply make a better life for themselves and their children. Why not let them be?

English is the #1 language in America right now but who knows how much longer it will be and unfortuntley no one is gonna make hispanics learn and speak english only when dealing with english speaking people so we have to learn enough to get by or we will never be in the know. Also my husband works with a bunch of hispanics he is their superior and knows they talk about him all time why else would they speak english when he hears them from a distance but then only spanish when he tries to ask them something.

Regarding this answer below:

Level 2
Because this is A merica. If they come here, and live here, then, they should speak English! I think it is rude of Mexicans NOT to speak English here, if they live/ work/breed/ here. "
Why? is english the 'official' language of the united states? when did that happen? If they "breed" here (that's a nice subtly racist undertone, making a reference to animals when you talk about "them")? This is America, made up of english, german, polish, norwegian, french, spanish, mexican, african, 500 kinds of asian and just about every other so-called ethnicity on the face of the planet. It's nice to see such a stupid and ignorant perspective from someone who is literally borne from immigrants. You are an arrogant fool if you think that all people should speak english just because you do.

I'm very proud of being Latin American and of speaking Spanish. I also speak English because I think it is important for me to be able to communicate with many different people and English is one of the most spoken languages of the world. Gringos who only speak English and don't bother to learn another language (and on top of it, get angry when they do not understand others) are pretty stupid and only demonstrate their lack of education.

I do not recall having had an opportunity to vote on how many languages we should have in the U S A. The Poles, Germans, Hungarians, Irish, etc. came into our country through legit points of entry. They learned our language. It is only recently that we have to "press one" for English.
I am also type A negative.

i think that if you live in america you should speak english i mean if you went to another country and did not speak that language then you would not do well but i also think that if we are going to allow the to become americans then we should provide classes that can teach not only the children but the adults to and i dont thik people should get angery at them for speaking there language because it is part of who the are as a culture.

If people want to speak a language other than English in private, that's perfectly okay. In public, though, it just rude to speak in a language that others don't understand. Kind of like the Korean manicure episode in Seinfeld.

You know what, here's a better question. If we AMERICANS went to MEXICO illegally would the Mexican gov't even consider it? I doubt the President of Mexico is itching to switch the national language to English. Also, you might want to take a good look at some of Mexico's laws. Did you know that there are places in Mexico where Americans could NEVER own land? Never. As in if you weren't born in Mexico, never ever ever. Trust me. All this tolerance we Americans are feeling towards "their" cause, wouldn't be in existance if the situation was reversed.
