First, try changing the IRQ to one that's not being used. (Look at View menu, then "Resources by connection")

If that doesn't work, find out what else is using the conflicting IRQ and uninstall both. Then reboot and Windows should find both and assign to new IRQ's.

If that doesn't work, consider how old your system is if it's running Windows 98! Tell your parents that you wil be hopelessly left behind in school if they don't buy you a new PC.

Hi Try going into "Control panel>System>Device Manager". Click on "Sound, Video, and Game controllers " or audio if that's what Win98 calls it. Remove the sound card (un-install) then reboot. System should pick up sound card on reboot and automatically reinstall correct drivers. See if this helps.

Is there a CD with the soundcard drivers on it? Sounds like the Win 98 CD doesn't have the drivers for your soundcard. You need to get the CD that came with the soundcard, or go to the maker of the soundcards website and download the drivers for Win98 that work with your soundcard.

You seem to have a sound card/motherboard fusion issue, you may need to buy a new one if your cannot remove the sound card from the motherboard.
Or if you mean that you have onboard sound, then go to event viewer and look for an: ID 10t error, this will explain what you need to do to fix it.

Try retrieving your sound card driver from the net on a support website.
