My old job could and did all the time. I earned vacation at a rate of 1 day of vacation every 2 weeks after being there for 9 years. When people got above a few months of vacation time they forced them to either take it or cash it in for their hourly wage. Not sure how legal it is but it happens all the time.

Many of the employers of the USA are doing this now. My last 2 companies have demanded the employees use their vacation time to cover shut downs throughout the year. I think Unions should start getting more involved, and if you don't have one,,,, GET ONE!

Sure they can, unless you have some contractual right. In most places they can fire you for absolutely no reason. Be gratefull you have a job and vacation time.

no you can just lose 7 hours of pay cause a vacation day is for 8 hours. So if they did make you use it make sure you get paid for an hour of overtime

Would you rather do that than take a day without pay? That would have been the other choice, I suspect.
