What is “estrogen dominance”?
This term coined by Dr. John R. Lee relates to a condition when there is insufficient progesterone in proportion to estrogen (estrogen is unbalanced or unopposed).
What causes excess level of estrogen in men?
Contrary to the popular belief that estrogen is a “female” hormone, it is also present in men, as a result of testosterone conversion. Normal serum concentration of estradiol in men is 20 – 50 picograms/ml.
As well as women, men can also experience the effects of excess estrogen.
Major causes of estrogen dominance in men:
- environmental estrogens; our food is a significant source of those: livestock is fed estrogens to grow faster and gain weight by retaining water; crops are sprayed with pesticides that mimic estrogens.
- impaired liver function
- prolonged intense stress increases demand for cortisol, which is made from progesterone. The process leaves less progesterone available for balancing estrogen.
What are the symptoms of “estrogen dominance”?
According to John R. Lee, M.D., symptoms of estrogen dominance that men can experience include weight gain, bloating, mood swings, irritability, headaches, fatigue, depression and hypoglycemia. Estrogen dominance is known to contribute to cancer of prostate and the breast. It may seem paradoxical, but men are not immune to breast cancer.

Men and women have both hormones, just in different proportions.
High estrogen levels has nothing to do with being a gay man. It's a misconception that gay men are "women trapped in men's bodies." If anything, gay men have a little TOO MUCH testosterone, frankly. Go to a gay nightclub one Saturday night and watch as the crowd devolves into one big riot of masculine sexual chaos.
We gay men are men trapped in MEN'S bodies, IMO...
Love, Jack.

Men can convert their testosterone to estradiol (via an enzyme known as aromatase). Estradiol lowers testosterone and makes men fatter.
Fat cells make more estradiol.
The conversion to estradiol increases as a male ages. It is not known for certain whether its because they tend to get fatter as they get older. Or the getting fatter part is the side affect of the estrogen.
The solution:
1 ) aromatse inhibitors ( a number of herbs do this efficiently ).
2) Stay slim :)

All women have a little testosterone. It's what gives us our sex drives.
Each sex has a little of the other's hormone, just not enough usually to make any major changes. Though, I do know of some women with facial hair due to too much testosterone.
