I hate folding/ironing laundry. Every so often, I see this homeless woman with a young girl at the end of the freeway off ramp with a "please help" sign. Would it be insulting to ask her if she wants to do my laundry for money? How much should I pay her?

Why would you let a filthy person fold your clean laundry? Also, odds are probably 50-50 she'll try to steal your clothes.

I think you should ask her. I'm sure she would feel better earning money than seeming like some type of beggar. She might even offer other services for a small amount of money, a bath, or meal. Be safe though, I wouldn't invite her in my home or anything while I was alone until I knew a little about her and the kid. But I don't think she is a bad person just because she's homeless. Being down on your luck and being a criminal are two different things. For all the people on here that claim they know that homeless people would try to run off with anything they could find, they probably haven't even been close to being homeless. They shouldn't be judging people in bad situations. God bless you. We need more people like you.

ACtually that is a great idea ifyou are willing to let some stranger do your laundry. And the pay $20 per load that is what a laundry mat would charge for washing, drying, ironing, and folding. Good luck!! By the way nice way of giving a homeless money with out feeling guilty that they might just spend it on stupid stuff because they are working for it. Also, clean the pockets before you put the clothes in the laundry bags, finders keepers!!!

NO, not insulting. But she wants money.

Be AWARE!

I have seen some pretty rough people selling roses or help signs and than see them go to a close parking lot, get in a nice car, and someone else gets out for awhile and sells.

S C A M !!!

There are jobs if people want them. They don't have to sit with a child on the freeway ramps for pitty.

Why would it be insulting to offer someone a job who is on the street corner begging? If she says no, she probably WANTS to be where she is. I heard those people make more money than they would if they actually had jobs.
I wouldn't be able to tell you how much you should pay her. Find out what laundromats charge to iron and fold. I'm sure it goes by the pound.
GOOD LUCK!!

I would stop and offer her the job. A person like that wants to earn there way not depend on the walfare system to do it. As for calling CPS as someone else suggested. It isn't against the law to look for work with your child. Why cause more problems for her and the child just because she wants to work. I would call your local laundry mat and ask what the charge is for bring wash in. Then I would pay her 5 bucks less than what they charge.
One thing I would do is stay with my things ubtil you know you can trust her with your belongings. and son't take her to your home just to be safe ubtil you build a repore with her.

I don't think it would be insulting. I can see how you would think that but if she is holding up a sign saying help obviously she has already lowerd her pride. I would do it. It would help you and her both. I would discuss with her what the two of you feel is fair. say like $3 a load or something who knows. I don't know where you live or your cost of living so you guys would need to work that out together. Go for it and help them out. Good luck!

Well if she is, she should not be asking for help. I have had several experiences where these people were not for real. When you offer them work and they refuse. So, you can always hope they really need the help. I do not think giving them money is the answer. However, I think you should find out a fair price to pay. You would not want to benefit from her misfortune.

Bet ya a fiver she won't take your job because she can make more panhandling.

To answer your question, I think your idea is great, but the bums in Dallas won't take jobs. If you offer them a job, they just look at you like you're crazy. Why rake leaves, mow a lawn, pick up trash when they make more than $15 an hour begging?

What you should do is call Child Protective Services next time she's out there with her kid. Child exploitation is against the law in US. Or (just thought of this) tell her to give ya $20 or you'll call CPS! haha

If I was homeless I'd be glad to have the opportunity to do some work in order to earn money. Much better than being a beggar.
