In most of North America, the autumn color change begins in the north and travels south. In the Rocky Mountains, autumn color begins at timberline and descends into the mountain valleys. The aspen groves in the Colorado Rockies usually turn color sometime between mid-September and mid-October, depending on elevation and the vagaries of autumn weather in the Rockies. Check with the local chamber of commerce for current conditions.

Manitou Springs and Pagosa Springs are nowhere near each other so there is no way to generalize when the aspens start to turn in these areas! There is also no way to predict an exact time, but generally the higher the altitude, the sooner the leaves turn. It also depends on how wet the summer was and the temperatures (the amount of sunlight is not an exact predictor). Generally, the last two weeks of September and first week of October will find peak color somewhere. If you don't like what you see, drive somewhere else to find the best views!

The previous answer is not correct. Aspens change color ONLY based on the amount of sunlight received during the day.

The Aspens in the Aspen area started changing on August 15th.
