Because when we talk nice to them and treat them to things like new spark plugs they always act in a fantastic way but when we ignore them and fail to wash wax etc they usually let us down in a big black huff of smoke PS I'm always nice to mine..

I think it's to do with the need for female companionship. The male projects the female pronoun onto the machine, and feels a bit happier. In a way, the machine can be a good surrogate for the female- it is completely predictable, the man is not threatened at all, and he can direct it as he wishes. Could it be that the only way to combine this sort of reliability with the idea of feminity is through a cold metal device?
'Men think of their mothers'... now where is that line from?
'She has a vagina, it doesn't'? you know, that's why these machines have sockets... and really, what did you think that twin exhausts were for?

You are right, men tend to call cars by female name and women tend to use mens names. I think they just like to feel protective towards it, as they would a woman.
My PC has a blokes name (missus decided) but I'd have given it a female name. (yep I'm a sad geek).
There is also something that says if the monarch is female, genderless objects (particularly ships) are referred to as she
if the monarch is male then they are referred to as he.
At least it's fairly simple

This is because the machinery does not answer back so the men feel that the machines are the only thing they can have a decent relationship with.
And I am sure you are already aware, men do not change lol!

It's not just men, it's just the way it is, I mean have you ever heard of a boat with a mans name, no they all have female names and women name them too, I'm sure it goes way back, try google it and see what you get.

In English, all the ships..all of them, including the ENTERPRISE of Star Trek, have a FEMENINE gender. Is not something men want to say. Is part of the English Grammar. When I say "ships", I mean cars, boats, planes...

I just nipped out and asked my car for advice on this & she said it was because she was curvy. Who am I to argue (except that I would never call an "it" anything but an "it")
