80s should have been, I think without MTV's meddling Rock n Roll would have been destroyed. In the beginning of the decade there was so much great stuff coming out of England, ska, new romantics, the synth bands, post-punk, punk jazz-funk... Black music showed signs of life too, mainly the break dance music and house. And of course towards the end the whole manchester thing which became acid house which became dance music. But MTV decided there was more money in keeping their zombies listening to rock and rap and what could have been an amazing time of musical innovation was only a shadow of what it could have been.
The 50s were a good decade, doo-wop and early rock were so much better than what they replaced. In the 60s all the fun in rock and roll was pushed aside for tired drug music. The 70s weren't bad excluding the mutation of "hard rock" into Metal. It also produced punk which was a significant effort in getting rid of the rock industry and disco which brought all the fun back. Reggae and (orthodox) industrial also came into their own in the 70s. The 90s were a proliferation of dance music which was fun. This decade is nothing but regurgitating rock/rap/techno.
All in all, I guess I'd go with the 50s with an honorable mention to the 80s for what could have been.

Sixties: The Vietnam war was going" the music seemed to be more on the peace side, and the music had more of what was going on around the world like the song by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and young. "Ohio" here's part of the lyrics" tin soldiers and Nixon coming four dead in Ohio, the song is about a peace march at a collage and four people were shot down by the national guards at the collage

The 60's, because soooo much changed. In just 10 short years, so much originality and really great music writing was accomplished. We went from Perry Como and Doris Day to Elvis, and teen idols, to The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and everything in between.

It all depends on the type of music you like....it'd be hard to generalize one specific decade for all music. But, if I had to pick one, mostly because of the terrific music and lyrics, I'd pick 1935 to 1945. You had great composers like Cole Porter, George Gerswin, singers like Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald etc.

the seventies for sure , but the last era of great music was early nineties with the likes of : alice in chains, tool, nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, mother love bone..etc ruling the airwaves how can you argue. sure is better than any corperate manufactured drivel they call music you hear on any popular medium today.
