I know this answer has been give already, but my most favorite book read in 7th grade was The Outsiders. My seventh grade language arts teacher went above and beyond with a wonderful unit on this book. I think it makes a great book to read for seventh graders because as new students in junior high/middle school, they are experiencing new things and are growing-up. It makes a great coming of age book. I'm 22 now and a soon-to-be elementary teacher. The book is still vivid in my memory. If you do choose to do this book with your students, share the movie with the students once you have finished reading the book!
Good luck and enjoy the book.

I remember my summer reading list entering 7th grade a few years ago was Jacob, Have I loved by Katharine Patterson, Tangerine by Edward Bloor, and That Was Then, This is Now by S.E. Hinton. And the reading list for the summer after 7th grade (going into 8th) I remember was The Land by Mildred Taylor and The Contender by Robert Lipsyte. So good luck! =]

I really liked The Outsiders. It made me cry. I don't remember much of what I read back in 7th grade. Most recently was Night and Caged Bird. I think that would be too complicated for 7th grade readers?

The original text of Black Beauty, The Black Stallion, The Secret Garden, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, The condensed version of The Count of Monty Cristo, anything from Longfellow and Edgar Alan Poe, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. I know some of these are deemed old fashioned however I bought my grandchildren many of these books and they loved them and had never heard of some of them.

Try some Terry Brooks, or the Dragonlance fantasy series.
Piers Anthony XANTH series is great too- the kids can try to figure out the real world origins of some Xanth characters or places. Plus, they're amusing!

I first read "A Christmas Carol" in 7th grade and loved it. That and our Greek mythology unit.
