There are several tests done in early pregnancy to detect neural tube defects. A common birth defect that is detected this way is spina bifida. The severity varies to mild to severe problems. This test must be done and calculated exactly in order to determine risk. If any of the information used for the calculation is incorrect then the result may be incorrect. Information used includes gestation (ie weeks along) and weight of mother. If a "high risk" result is obtained, then additional testing is strongly recommended - such as an ultra sound. So in other words the baby may or may not be at risk for birth defects.

MAy have downsyndrome. If these are the results she got from her blood work that's probably waht it is. Next her doctor will probably do one or two things an amniocentisis where they take a sample of fluid from inside the womb or and ultrasound to measure the thickness of the back of the neck on the baby. They do this b/c if it's too large it can indicate downsyndrome. Good luck

i am sure she was told more than that but can't remember. that's a bit broad, it could mean a lot of things. but it has to do with the child's brain or spinal cord or both. she might want to have another talk with her doctor.
