At the present (from a christian point of view) ancient beliefs of ancient people like Greek (Helenic) and mayas and aztec gods and goddess are "MYTHS", a fiction, a fantasy.
I think the title of "Greek Mythology" was forged by people many centuries after the christian religion was the official religion of the West Empire with Ruler Constantine. We have to consider that for ancient people, Zeus and Afrodita and Poseidon were GODS, as powerfull as the christian God. The had powers, they performed miracles. They had temples and priests who whorshiped them. It was the same for deities in ancient Egypt, whose religion lasted for 5,000 (FIVE THOUSAND YEARS). And so the Aztec gods, who ruled the lives of the ancient mexican people. How the ancient greeks, and egiptian and aztec people explained those Gods?...Telling stories about how those gods were created...Now those stories are legends and myths. A fantasy, of course, when we read them as stories of fiction and Myths...I am not against any religion. I am just trying to explain how Mythology was introduced to Occidental Civilization. Romans grabbed the greek culture and took it with them, giving new names to Greek gods and godesses: Poseidon was Neptune, Afrodita was Venus, Zeus was Jupiter. Baco was Dionisious, Hermes was Mercury, etc., etc.If you have the time, read this MYTHOLOGY...is just fascinating!!!...

you have right to ask about... 95% of peaple belive in a greek mythology...but in reality it doesnt exist a greek mythology...
greeks arrived in the south of balcan around the year 1200 B.C. and they found a people called pelazg... all the stories and legends were already created from those tribues, but as the greeks (what we call today) were people from fenicia, asyria and egypt they brought with them the fenician alphabet. so they were the first to write those stories...and took the right to call it a greek mythology.... sigh
