The Smiths

Those songs still sound as fresh today as they did then. It's good to see Morrissey have a revitalised career at the moment too.

Best song: "This charming Man" or perhaps "How soon is now."

Best solo artist in the eighties? That's tough... probably go for Prince because he was so innovative.

Depeche mode, one of the few groups who have progressed in force over the years, constantly updating their music style and even through their personal traumas, they still manage to fill stadiums worldwide with every live performance they do,A lot of groups from the 80s who are still going today are good but haven't progressed much, just listen to speak and spell and then playing the angel, now that's progression, and it's about time that Martin Gore was awarded for his song writing

THE THE
Matt Johnson ploughed a wonderful esoteric furrow though the 1980's... after a patchy first album he strukc gold again and agai, from Soul mining with the classics - this is the day (your life with surely change) Giant and i've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life...
Next album was even better - dealing with US foreign policy, prostitution, sex, realtionships, money and so on...

Gotta paste theses lyrics..... how good are they?

Angels of deception

Well it's high noon at the U.K. corral,
& it's high time I got myself back on the rails,
I'm the lonesome cowboy, ridin across the range,
with just a hand held radio--to keep me sane,
ridin through the f.m. stations, the tumbleweed,
& the petrol stations,
Will all on board this yankee station
Prepare themselves for battle stations--

CHORUS
Jesus Wept. Jesus CHRIST.
I can't see for the tear gas, & the dollar signs in my eyes.
Well, whats a man got left to fight for
when he's bought his freedom
by the look of this human jungle
It aint just the poor who'll be bleeding!

Most everyone round here thinks they're something special
that destiny will be kind--
While they're digging for gold, diving for pearls,
& aiming for heaven from this man made world.

Come on down--the devil's in town
He's brought you sticks and stones
to bust your neighbors bones,
he's stuck his missiles in your gardens,
& his theories down your throat--
& god knows what you're gonna do with him
Cos I certainly don't

CHORUS

Down by the river, I've been washing out my mouth,
cos deep in the heart of me
there's a frightened man breaking out.
Oh I was just looking for paradise
anywhere in this world
While they're gunning for heaven--
from this man made hell!!!

Angels of Destruction.

and dusk afterwards was also fantastic....

INXS. They were the most successful band of the 1980s and their singer was so deathly hot, I would've literally put my life onthe line to see them live. If it were possible, I'd still say that. I wish I could bring him back just to play one more massive show for anyone who wnated to see them, and it would be a free show. I know I'd be in the front row or maybe on stage if I was lucky, maybe even holding his hand and begging him not to leave again. I'd certainly be in tears, I'll tell you that.

It's got to be New Order and the classic Blue Monday. With the record for the highest selling 12" in current music history and its constant use in dance samples I can think of no other competition. It is easily recognisable and bridges the gap between indie, dance, pop and rock with suprising ease.
The band are also pretty amazing. After the death of their Joy Division bandmate Ian Curtis it seemed the remaining band members were finished, unable to match the dark, moody and genius lyrics and smooth instrumentals that their Joy Division career had produced. Indeed the critics, upo hearing their first attempts as New Order to create good music, said that they were 'trying to relive past glories' with a reluctant lead singer and lost instrumentalists.
However Blue Monday broke this image - it proved Bernard Sumner was the leading man and lead vocalist that he could be and that their embracing of their guitar laden past was somehow 'modernised' with the addition of keyboards, drum machines and the use of sampling. The video itself is also a reflection of the more mainstream image they wanted. Before, most of Joy Division's videos were just their preforming the song. This video dumped that, with emphasis on showing the band (where fans actually saw the band members in the video) and a good if vague 'plot' to the video. Their music has constantly evolved and changed, and they are focused on their music constantly. The members are also incredibly proud of their Mancunian roots and also of their Joy Division past. This makes them very admirable and more human to me.
Depeche Mode come a close second. I adore this band. The band has a whole is a testament to the uses and possibilitites a keyboard can give a band. This is best seen in a song like Never Let Me Down Again, from the Music For The Masses album (1987). This piece is incredibly atmospheric, with swooping keyboards, which are smooth and majestic, and powerful vocals of Dave Gahan, who by this point had much improved in terms of vocal range and quality from the lightweight songs which they originally focused on as a band.
The lyrics are simple and yet full of meaning. This is a particular skill of DM's lyricist, Martin L. Gore, who also plays guitar and keyboard with the band, and sings sometimes also. The major structure of many DM songs involves using a specific theme to highlight a wide range of points, such as the theme of sadomasochism being used to highlight dominance and subserviance in families, in governments and in our culture in general. Many of these songs are controversial, and Never Let Me Down Again is no exception. It focuses on a very vague theme centred around fame, sex and drugs, which were issues very close to both Martin Gore and also the band as a whole. It must also be pointed out that Martin Gore did not really choose freely to do this, and he faced a difficult task as many believed the band would not survive after Vince Clarke left.
Also is Depeche Mode's longetivity and ability to survive as a band in difficult circumstances, even to the present day. They have survived drug problems, alcoholism and financial loss, personal losses, divorce and criticism by the music press to survive as a band (with the loss of Alan Wilder in 1995) to the present day, and are also still able to fill stadiums and gain Top 10 selling songs. The simple fact that they are still around, along with New Order, is surely a testament to how good they are...;
