The Great Wall of China. I presume that everyone in China knows about it, and that's 20% of the world population right there. :-)

ADDENDUM: Even though it's not in the world, I would guess that the Moon is the most famous landmark, but I guess that's ruled out for space reasons.

Ancient...the Colosseum in Rome---as it stands for all that was good and bad, powerful and powerless, beautiful and ugly that was the ancient world and is the modern world

Modern...Arlington National Cemetery---pretty much for the same reasons at the Colosseum...imagine if all of the people buried there could tell their stories and force today's leaders to listen...

I wish it was the Parthenon but I think the Eiffel tower is more famous.
