Does Half-Life 2 still require a constant Internet connection to play it?

Or is there an offline standalone version of it now?

I am referring to the version for PC

My friend had it and he said it needed an internet connection to play it but I'm not sure if it needed it permanently to play it.
I have the Xbox version and that does not need any net connection.
Though i still couldn`t finish it because it kept freezing. :-|
