Well if there are 1,000 pieces of straw then the chance is 1 in a thousand. Not likely. So it is veryrare that you find the needle ina hay stack.

odds depend on the size of haystack and how many strands of hay there actually are... also on the time factor... would you have unlimitted time or a week or so?
