I'm using my bro's account, so ignore the name. I just turned 20, and I just realized that my "style" is a bit too formal; sometimes, people ask if I have an interview coming up. I am petite, 5'0, and a lot of people think I'm 15 years old before they know me. I thought I was looking sophisticated like in TLC's What Not to Wear, but I ended up looking business-like. I have lots of those striped dresspants that you can find in the juniors dept. (basically i try to buy everything from juniors dept to make sure I'm not buying stuff made for older ppl) I found a brown wool blazer with pink stripes that actually fits me, but I don't know if wearing it would look sophisticated, or just look like im over-dressed. I thought I would pair it with dark jeans or khakis/cordoroys. Please help me!

Thanks for the answers so far. I agree that I should steer away from dress pants, but also, I want to look sophisticated, not just casual. If I do a casual look, I often look even younger, which I guess is why i tended to go for business look. Basically, I want to look a little more grown up, but not like I work in a corporation.

I used to have a similar problem, everyone wanted to know why I was so dressed up all the time. I like plain classy clothes but I learned to get a more casual look by pairing a nice, dressy shirt with dark blue jeans and a few casual but classy jewelry pieces. It was dressy but not formal dressy and I didn't look out of place walking my dog or going out for lunch.

Accessories and hairstyles can be what determines onlookers age of a person. Try wearing casual but sophisticated jewelry and take a look at your hairstyle, it may need an update or you may need to simply style it diffrerently. Purses can say a lot about a person too.

Go to a store and play around with different jewelry, clothes and purses, even shoes. Take along a friend or two that you trust to give their honest opinion. Have your friends find some items for you to try on, you may be surprised what you like once it's on.

Talk to a few different hair stylists and ask what they think could help you, don't be a bit shy, they love to get challenging questions and they love to talk even more! If they suggest something that sounds scary ask if they would be able to change it easily if you didn't like it. But don't be afraid to let them try something totally new to you. They know how difficult it is for some to make any drastic changes.

Try being more casual during the day and you shouldn't get funny looks or questions if you're more dressy at night. Going a bit casual should be alright as long as you stay away from wearing cartoon characters on your clothes and not wear holes in your pants! But then again you never know...

Good Luck

I know exactly how you feel I am only 5' and it's hard to find good clothes for petites. But at American eagle they have jeans in size short the changed the size so now i wear a 4-short. I would wear dark colored jeans they're easy to dress up and can look sophisticated also!

well in my opinion leave the blazer and dresspants for work. For a relaxed and casual look try vintage tees, flat shoes, and sexy dark washed jeans with a sparkle belt in my mind those things suit a 20 year old. When it comes to business your going the right way, although you could add a few sexy lace skirts with a dark blazer. Totally hot!! Look for layed back stuff, and as for blazer and pants since your small it will always be hard to find things that fit perfectly, dont be afraid to buy a pear of pants in the next size up and get them tailored. Go for it!!

You can wear a blazer with a plain tshirt underneath and jeans for a smart evening out. But go with your instinct, you don't have to dress like a sheep!

I'm in business, and I don't wear a blazer except for meetings, if that helps.

Be sure that your outfits aren't ENTIRELY made up things like this since they are labeled 'Wear to Work': http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/category.do?cid=5382&pageID=-1
