sounds like you are missing a cylinder. I would try replacing all of the spark plugs and wires if they haven't been replaced in a while. It could also be bad gas, if you have gotten water in your tank or if the gas has been tainted with something, it could cause black smoke and shutting off. I would probably run by autozone or somewhere and get some octane booster or some injection cleaner first and try that, then the plugs if necessary.

This all started when you replaced the Mass air flow sensor right?
Did you go buy a new one from Nissian, or get a rebuilt one from a parts house , or did you go to a junk yard and get a "used " one?
If you did the last one you got the wrong one the black smoke is a sign of way to much fuel in the combustion chambers , the Mass air flow sensor senses the amount of air that is getting to the engine and tell the ecm to either richen or lean the mixture
like the O2 it helps control the fuel mixture the o2 tells the ecm how much air is present after Combustion tha Mass air tells it how much fuel is need to run the engine. The wrong mass air can actually give the ECM false info resulting in you guessed it black smoke.

Does the "check-engine" light come on? If so, the car will give a self diagnostic code that you can look up in the book for your car. I think it would be best if you go this route, it could be one of several different things. When the car is off, turn the the key on and off three times (don't start the car). Then watch the "check-engine" light blink.... count until a pause, then count again. My car always starts with 12, and ends with 55. The two digit #, or #'s in between is your diagnostic code. Autozone will look it up 4 free.
I was also told my C.Converter must be the problem, it wasn't, and good thing too, that part is expensive!!

Yahoo answers are free ( at least for now) but your best bet is to get it to a reliable repairman. Could be a clogged Catylatic converter or any number of dumb things. I actually had one of those cars and I can tell you , unless you are a better than average mechanic, you won't be able to fix this thing by yourself.
I have extensive professional auto- tech experience and that car put me through hell. Get youself some good help. Good luck. Oh yea, beware of the Dealers, they will almost always rob you blind.
OMG Ken D is right again!

It sounds like your engine is flooding with gas. Black smoke is too much gas and blue smoke is burned oil. For some reason it looks like you engine is flooding to the point that it is stalling. Get it checked by a reliable repairman. Pops

Your catalytic converter is stopped up. This needs to be replaced .Catalytic converters are required due to emission control laws. The converter can be cut out and replaced with a regular muffler and your vehical will run fine again. This can be done by the owner of the vehical only.Since this is against the law to do you should take it to your auto mechanic and have this replaced with a new converter. brace yourself when looking at the price of this part

I would check the catylic converter, its probably clogged up fromthe excess fuel the engine was releasing earlier and damaged it. Was the smoke coming from the converter when you looked at the exhaust? was the converter glowing red? If so replace it or eliminate it.

Black smoke is fuel, blue smoke is oil and white smoke is water. Based on what your saying my guess is a blown diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator and its over fueling.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

the only thing i can think of is u have to change ur fuel filter. If its dirty, u will stall out. this is because the filter is so dirty, little fuel can get through. this will also help on fuel milage. or it could also be if u have to many miles on the car, the engine will quit cuz its old and been used.

Either your burning oil, which is bad because you shouldn't be.
or
you have water in your gas. Try dry gas.
The smoke is a bad sign. I think your burning oil. Bad gasket, big bill.
