If "lol" is ALL you have to say, why bother?

I think it's easy to lose things like tone when communicating electronically and abbreviations like "lol" and emoticons are a way of putting it back in. It would be nice, though, if more people were able to communicate clearly without relying so heavily on that kind of stuff.

To be honest, I hate the ongoing abbreviated text language among the youngsters. I sometimes receive a 5-line e-mail and spend around three minutes just to decipher what it means. But LOL (abb. for laugh out loudly) is a well-known and universally accepted chat expression. When one doesn't want to use a smiley, when he/she needs a stronger expression, I guess, LOL can be used. I find it more suitable than writing "hahaha" or "eheuehe" etc. I think, those meaningless sounds might annoy the receiver or might sound as if you're being sarcastic. So, I believe, the best way to understand whether a person is a chav or not is to check his/her spelling. If his ritin lyke tis, his a perf chaa, ma!

I don't know what a chav is, either. Maybe I am one...LOL.

See... it's a great way to show that you are just kidding.

That makes a lot of difference to the meaning of typed words.

LOL started out meaning "laugh out loud" but really it's more often used now as a sort of typed "chuckle"

Anybody can use it, and most people understand its meaning.

If you REALLY want them to know that you are laughing out loud, now you have to type ROFL (rolling on floor laughing) or
LMAO (laughing my a** off).

i imagine that the air analogy ought to nicely be incorrect notwithstanding the most in the back of it something to imagine about. in accordance to you, not something exists that ought to't be measured by one in all our 5 sences, if i'm not flawed. That way of wondering isn't being very open minded. that's form of a historic guy putting forward that there is not something previous both or 3 miles that he moved in his international, if he couldn't see it or contact it, it did not exist to him. He would not imagine there changed into something else there because he had in no way considered it. Likewise very few hundred years in the past we had no theory that planets outdoors of what shall we see and degree the position there. a twin of the historic guy, if we cant see it, we are able to not say that it exists? you're both assuming that we already recognize each thing, or that we are able to not probably study of something new. in basic terms because technology says that each thing must have a organic rationalization does not advise that issues that are supernatural do not exist. they in basic terms have not a fashion to degree them yet. you'll proceed to make certain that the more beneficial technology learns the more beneficial they'll comprehend how a lot we do not recognize, and that's my perception that not even allowing the prospect of the supernatural is a large mistake on the area of technology. you may ask many non secular human beings in the adventure that they have got felt something supernatural and many will inform you they have. you're ignoring them putting forward they are ignorant and it may't be conceivable. I do a similar difficulty with those who declare to have considered alien deliver's. If about 2/3 of the worlds inhabitants were to inform me that they'd considered or felt a alien deliver for thousands of years i imagine i'd replace my concepts about the concern. in basic terms because i have not considered one does not advise that the billions who've were lieing.

I finally gave in to using "lol" as before I thought it was kinda geeky internet speak but it saves typing hahahahahaha. I've noticed loads of people using it who aren't chavs .... just give in - lol

btw for people who don't know what a chav is

No, it's not restricted to chavs. A lot of people on this sort of board use these abbreviations, I think it makes them feel part of a club. Personally I prefer to use English.

There could be worse things to abbreviate. lol. Like say an expression that would describe an angry emotion like "phiw" (punch hole in wall)lol or a sad expression like "cmts" (cry myself to sleep)lol. So from that perspective the common usage of lol isn't that bad.lol There could even be an expression describing questions like these.lol Like "WMT" for example which I just now invented means "wasting my time". LOL

It is a quick way to let your chat partner know that what they said made you smile or laugh. I think it is a great way to keep the conversation going and letting your friend know that you are paying attention to them. I think I prefer LOL more than those aggravating smiley faces..now THOSE emoticons are rude!!!

When I use it, it's because I really am laughing out loud. Of course, I laugh out loud a LOT. LOL (ok, more of a chuckle that time than a laugh, but no one would know what COL means).

We are communicating more and doing it at an ever increasingly bad level. Half the people on here cannot spell and use infantile abbreviations.
