that is a good question. but maybe the wing is just where ronaldinho plays the best and where he is most comfortable playing.

Both in the Brazil and the Barcelona teams, Ronaldinho has carte blanche. He is not placed in a specific position nor does he receive specific instructions. He is that kind of extraordinary player that performs best when allowed to play at will and inspiration.
Have you notivced that in the Barcelona team, he often changes position with Deco, Xavi, Eto'o, Messi? It is part of the Barcelona strategy, it infuses inpredictability and confuses defenses.

He doesn't play on the wing.. he starts on the wing and drifts in.. he has a free role in the team and will pop up through the middle and up the right... he is the playmaker... he stays more on the left because he is left footed.

He probably spends more time on the left because he gets more space to pick up the ball and run at defences. Playing him in the middle would be too easy for defences because he would always receive the ball with his back to the defence which would be easier for them to play against.

He doesn't play on the wing. He is handed a free role as a withdrawn striker.
