If I am staying here in the United States, I do not tip anybody but the bag carrier, or room service.
The ONLY time that I tip maid service is when I go to Cancun, and the only reason I tip them then is because they will leave extra bottled water for you- and I know that my friends and I tend to leave our room messy running in and out from the beach all day, and leaving a bunch of beverage cups everywhere. We typically leave them 20 dollars a night.

Tips are for exceptional service. Mundane service is paid for by the hotel/motel. The bill sometimes has a gratuity added. I try NOT to frequent those places. They tend to stand out as having just average service and no incentive to me to pay an additional tip. I also know a lot of the staff are not paid enough by the hotel/motel owners. It is not my or the other guests' job to make up the difference in tips.
Always pay the giver of the service personally. That is how I do it.

Five dollars a day is customary in a mid-priced hotel.
And for the record, to Cristanine, you never have to feel bad or leave a tip if you take the Bible. The hotels don't pay for them. They are provided by a religious organization and will be replaced free of charge. I am sure if you don't have a Bible and want one, this group would want you to take it. Distributing Bibles is what they're all about.

I think they deserve a significant tip. After all, waiters get tipped so much and the job they do is a lot easier. It takes a lot of time for them to make everything nice. I suggest you should leave $10 at the last night of your stay.

If I make an exceptionally big mess (like my two kids can) then I will leave a $5 tip. But if I make normal wear and tear then yes, I think that their normal salary is sufficient.
