i can get norton paid for by my company, for my home PC. I prefer AVG. I find it much better, simpler to use and more powerful in detecting/deleting viruses.
I have worked on someone else's system, where they had Norton (full norton suite, paid for, all up-to-date), and still gotten a virus....and norton did not clear it... it just kept reporting that it was there, and wouldnt get rid of the damn thing!!
I removed norton (they had about 4 weeks subscription left), and installed AVG. On the first sweep, It got rid of that virus and found (and deleted) several others.
why do people use norton? I think it's because it has become the most prominent name in AV (because of it's PR, not because it merits it), and many new PC builds come with it pre installed.....It offers the full works (firewall, AV, etc) people just assume that they are going to be covered for everything and dont have to think about it anymore.
I like to configure my own system and know what I am using.
sygate firewall, AVG anti-virus, spy-bot and ad-aware, plus I use some other methods to check my system, tie my ports down, etc

Hi
Yeah AVG is very very good indeed.. i have had it since the beginning and coupled with a good firewall like Zonealarm its a config that really can't be beaten.. Norton and the others are ok but for instance with regards to laptop use they can slow down your system a great deal and to be honest I have known friends who stick with the branded stuff and have nothing but problems.. At the end of the day you have to ask the question.. How have AVG been so successful with zero mainstream advertising.. Answer.. Because they don't need to.. The system works and everybody knows it..

as free anti-viruses go avg ranks along the best,it does what it claims to do and has adequate protection for home based systems
however ,avg has several flaws in its interface,1 being its too good sometimes,it finds "false posotives" which are viruses that dont really exist, this gives you a false sense of security, beliving you have a infected system when in fact its totally clean
one good free anti-virus is avast 4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html),this is probally the best anti-virus program i have come across in 8 years of using windows based systems
its easy to install, fast to update, and the scanner is thourough and exact,it has 6 real time protection scanners running at once, and uses very little memory unlike programs like norton and mcafee
its particully good for limewire file sharing buddies as it has a p2p sheild,as well as a standard sheild, web sheild, network sheild ect
i highly recommend this program ,and as i have been using it for the last year and it has had a 100% detection rate, and
i feel safe while on-line using avast 4.7
good luck

Yes I have used it satisfactorily for years.
However you should know:
AVG Free Limitations
AVG Free Edition has the following limitations:
* AVG Free Edition cannot be installed on server operating systems (such as Windows Server 2003), nor can it be used for the scanning of network drives.
* Scheduling options in the AVG Free Edition are very limited (only one scheduled update per day, one scheduled scan per day etc.).
* AVG Free Edition receives updates via a lower priority service. Priority updating via high-speed servers is only available for purchased products.
* AVG Free Edition does not offer advanced testing options, password-protected archives reporting, adjustment of scan process priority and many others.
* AVG Free Edition has no technical support!

I looked into free anti virus software recently and of the reviews I've read (see example below) AVAST comes out on top over AVG (though AVG also rated highly). I've downloaded AVAST and seems to work like a dream.

I have it installed and so do a few ppl i know, they all rate it highly, it updates pretty quick and regularly and doesn't slow system performance. Obviously nothing is faultproof but I had Norton installed which I paid £40 for and it was slowing my system down.
