After a short search, without any 100% evidence all i can tell you is that one, not all birth and death dates were known, therefore roman numerals were used in place, also, it was classed as a more dignified burial to use these numerals. Hope this sheds some light, all the best.

count the number of + robert was born in a year with 10+, and dies in a year with 9+. wife alice was born in the year with 9+ and dies in the year 7+. it wouldnt be hard to work out. i would do it but im watchin jackie chan tuxedo film. im guessing rough estimate 1887 and 1890

Robert probably died in a year that ends in 8
and Alice probably died in a year that ends in 9
other than that it would take time to get it . . .

There is a website called timeanddate.com that allows you to generate any calendar from any year.
It might save you a bit of time if you make progress.
