based on the way parents fail to train their children while they are young, yes. all you teens are "social retards" you do not know how to behave. you do not know how to take responsibility. if parents would train their children properly from birth there would be less social retards.

I haven't raised any teens, yet, so this is totally just theory. My mom wouldn't let me spend too much time don't what I wanted, which was to play computer. She would so get on my nerves by coming up with things for me to do. It was like she couldn't stand the sight of me relaxing and doing something I enjoyed. It may be that teens need a challenge. When you get bored is when you'll do drugs, drink, and have sex because you can't or won't find something more stimulating to do. Thing is, drugs and alcohol isn't that stimulating. It's dulling. I spent ten years wasting time getting drunk, smoking pot, and barely surviving going from one job to another, moving from one crappy rental room to another. I partied a whole bunch. I didn't get anything useful out of it. Was it fun? Not really. See the expectations as challenges to overcome not obstacles that stop your progress.
You could see it as helping you to secure a good future for yourself. You've probably heard this before, but it's true. To get a good job you'll need a college education. I've worked at dozens of restaurants, fast-food joints, courier services, and janitorial jobs. They aren't fun. They don't pay well. They aren't challenging. Stick to your education as your best bet to have a good life. Do you want to live in a good house with nice neighbors or struggle to pay rent on a crappy place with druggie neighbors? I wish I could be where you are again, I would do things so differently.

I have school, homework, lots of end of year study, a job, am learning to drive and have a few bitchy friends so my mums expectation for me to be always on top of everything all the time, to get great grades, be cheerful and always be responsible is both stifling and hard to handle. I've been so highly strung lately, I've forgotten how to relax! I think adults need to take it easy and stop piling on the expectations, your teen years should be there to enjoy, not to waste being stressed out about university and careers.

Actually I don't think adult expectations are high enough. We let them out of chores, family responsibilities, give them rides to school when they miss the bus, make excuses for bad manners, etc.

It depends on the expectations and the teen.

YES< they are! I'm not saying we give too many chores and stuff, what I'm saying is...hmm... how do I put this...well, my mom still wants me to marry, but during my teens she NEVER let me date...she gave me the long speech on growing up and becoming an adult, but wouldn't let me go to college alone....she wanted me to think wisely about my finances but wouldn't let me get a job...wants me to have kids but NEVEr told me about the birds and the bees...
