There are two basic ways to add another strand of a different color into knitted work: the way you are describing and intarsia. The site below mentions some clearer diagrammed instructions on how to add the second yarn than I can explain in words. And if you're up for a challenge, maybe nexttime you can try intarsia, which actually in some ways is much easier and usually saves yarn.

I think this is what they mean:

Pull the yarn from two balls (of two different colors, presumably) and hold it together like it was ONE strand of yarn. Cast on normally with the strand held together. Later on, drop one color and continue knitting with the one they specify.

Does that make any sense? IF I could see your pattern, it might be easier for me to explain.

i attempted that quite some years lower back even as i turned right into a dumb youthful mom devoid of adequate funding to get the yarn i necessary. great mess, yet must be performed in case you want to spend the time "un-plying" your yarn. in basic terms because the yarn demands a particular length needle isn't any signal that's the dimensions you want to paintings with. each and each human beings has our own "stress" on our paintings and my stitches are extremely loose so i exploit smaller needles than human beings do with a similar yarn. also in basic terms because a yarn is "4-ply" does not make it knitting worsted. Fingering, events and toddler yarns are also in "4-ply". ideal wager is to bypass procuring and hit upon a yarn which will paintings fairly than attempting to un-ply what you've accessible.
