The fence was probably one of the first innovative pieces of technology that early man developed. It is likely this was crucial in the development of agricultural societies and eventual civilisations. Being able to domesticate animals would have relied on being able enclose animals in someway. Being able to control the location of animals would have been a defining character of some societies.
The earliest fences would have been made out of wood. Later it mayhave been certain plants or shrubs may have been used to contruct fences, effectively a kind of hedge.
With the development of industrial processes, iron fences would have developed. These in particular would have been important in security functions.
