What's with the serious, intelligent and mind challeging questions, love?
I'll try to give my answer as much effort as your question deserves.
For some people it's always difficult to trust someone.Maybe they trusted too much and the wrong people in the past and got seriously hurt or even traumatised.
I've made friends online and found it is better than going out and meeting people. When I go out people are partying, drinking, drunk or getting drunk and the agression is a serious obstacle to enjoy any real human interaction .In real life it's far more difficult to ignore people or kick them of your buddy list as one of the previous answers stated.
Online there are millions of folks and I've met some who I really love and even some I'm absoulutely sure about their statements and identity cos they gave me proof and trusted me enough to open up like I did to them. You can go slow online and that's so rewarding.Focus on the important stuff, real life can be so shallow. It depends what you want or are looking for and what you expect.Just like in real life,if you're stupid and naive you get hurt. Not that you deserve it then but it will happen just as in real life.
Really I do have friends outside the net but my live is so much richer with the ones I met online.I know some of them will be not genuine but that's no diffrent as in real life.I'dd say, don't be naive and it'll be OK.
Another advantage online is that you can meet people from everywhere and trust me in my local bar the public is much more limited and even boring.Of course there are very interesting and fun people in my neighbourhood but if they vallue the same things as I do and therefore would be perfect to befriend with, they will resent the going out life just as much as me.I have more chance to meet them here than in the local bar where the drunk, loud, agressive and irritating ignorants rule.

Here is a GREAT example of what you can come across out there online.I met this guy in a gameroom. We chatted for monthsand became great friends. He told me he was 31.I logged on one day and I saw that he was in a kiddie room"Go Fish".I was like "hmmmmm" so I signed in under an alias younger name and went in the room, said hi and he asked ASL.I said "lol u first" he said he was 17 and asked if I had ever cybered b4 cuz he heard ppl did that online" I called him a perv and left the room and then told him off on messenger then deleted his name from my buddy list.So just be VERY careful of what 411 you put out there cuz yes I have met GREAT people but I have also met wolves in sheeps clothing, wanting to prey on the naive. That route is usually chosen cuz it is easier to be someone they are not.Kinda sad actually.

It doesn't matter where you meet people..they can lie to you. If you meet someone in a bar or grocery store, you know no more about them than if you met them online. I met my current b/f online and we have been together well over a year and are very happy. You have to learn to trust your gut.

You can't always verify people's identity or what people say to you in person either. Liars are everywhere, not just online just like there are honest people everywhere.

Yes it would....I could trust anyone that I had never seen. I can tell by talking to people if I like them as a person but that's about it.

coz u don't get to see the person you're talking to unless he has a web cam .. besides , it's like a kind of change .. u know .. i don't mean that i do disapprove thiskind of relations and bonds but people are too desperate to find someone worthy and understanding , someone who wouldn't judge you ...

meeting people face to face is the best way. but some people can make themselves sound and "look" better on line.pervert can pick up the innocent and lonely people faster on line.

For some people, with their real life friends it's harder to be yourself with them and with online friends, although you can't really see who they are, don't really know them, it's easier to talk to them about more personal problems.
