I vaguely recall something like this. Had a title like "The Year One" (after the bomb, I presume) but I haven't been able to find it listed on the Internet.

The scene that sticks in my mind is where the family has pulled over for some reason and cannot get back into traffic because it is running at high speed in panic and nobody will let them in. The driver makes what he calls a "Stop Sign" by pouring gasoline on the road and lighting it. Then he darts into the momentary gap in the traffic.

Is that the one you are thinking of?
