Passing the FairTax (HR-25 / S-25) eliminate the income tax and would cause 55% of the lobbyists, who are in Washington just to manipulate the tax code, to go get a productive job. That would tak a lot of money out of politics. We don't need McCain/Feingold, just the FairTax.

President Dwight Eisenhower said in his farewell speech:
"Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

He also said,
"I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it."

The answer is that it is up to each citizen to be properly informed. I don't know if we are past that point or not. I hope not.
