I have a favorite, so if someone guesses it...the question will go to them. If not...we might have to let it go to a vote...and no one wants that.

To CroationSensation.... Eddie Van Halen did NOT invent "tapping". Steve Hackett of Genesis was doing that way back in the early seventies - long before anyone had even heard of Eddie Van Halen.

As for a favorite guitarist... here are a few I admire:
Eric Johnson
Joe Satriani
Alex Lifeson
Trevor Rabin
Roine Stolt
Michael Schenker
Allan Holdsworth
Pat Metheny
Jim Matheos
And the aforementioned Steve Hackett

Eddie Van Halen. Just an amazing guitarist! Heavy metal music wouldn't be the same if he didn't invent tapping!

Just wish he would get off his butt and do something with Van Halen!!!

****To Mongo: Allan Holdsworth often gets the credit for the invention of tapping legato playing. Arguably, it was Eddie Van Halen who popularized the technique for the modern audience. Certainly his is the name most closely associated with the use of tapping in rock music. He adapted the technique after watching Jimmy Page's "Heartbreaker" guitar solo at a Led Zeppelin concert in Los Angeles in 1972. Perhaps the most famous employment of tapping is the short piece "Eruption" on the first Van Halen album, which features very fast tapping triads and formed the blueprint for heavy metal lead playing throughout the 1980s. Eddie also patented a pop-out stand that enables a musician to employ the technique while standing and moving around..***

I don't know if your into rock, but if it were a rock guitar player it would be joe satriani or Eric Clapton. But if its jazz (favorite style) it would be either George Benson of Curtis Forbes.
