OK, maybe I should have phrased the question as "Do women and HIGHER math mix?"

I'm not claiming that women can't add 2 and 2 together. :)

If women don't like math, is that the cause or the effect that they're not as good in math, err, higher math, as men?

How could have Hypatia been a "Platonic philospher" if she died when Plato was only 13 years old?

Only if they deal with whole numbers like 69

Not really. They probably could be just as good at it as men, but most don't like it.

I spent 5 years at an engineering school, tutored dozens of people in math, and women simply just don't like math. Either they just don't get it or feel that they need to. Maybe they pretend not to like it for attention or were brought up to think that way, but a lot of them sucked at math.

However, the girls who WERE good at math were terrific. Maybe they need to work harder. I don't know.

Oh, you added higher math. My above statements still hold true and is even worse for Calculus and beyond. Hardly any women in that area, in my experience.

As to the below poster's assertion that women did better in Calc than the men, I am skeptical. I suppose if there are twenty girls in a class of 100, and half got A's, sure they did better statistically. Sounds like I hit a nerve. I am just saying that most women don't choose math, especially higher math, as a career option. I would welcome some more women in the field because hanging out with a bunch of men gets tiresome.

Studies show that women are probably just as good at abstract math maybe better. However, studies are almost conclusive that men are better at spatial analysis and mentally rotating 3D shapes than women. Men are probably more geared towards engineering fields because it comes easier to them.

I'm very confident in my ability to do higher math... and am proud of my GPA in both my undergrad and graduate work. Yes, women can do higher math if they wish.

Sure, I branched off from the path of pure and applied maths... my B.S. is in mathematics, but my M.S. is in math education. The thing is, children and the future of methodology used in schools became more important to me than to go straight applied math. I don't see myself as any less capable for my decision, though.

That is a very stereotypical question. Show me an Asian that can't do math, an African American who can't dance. Of course women are capable of doing math and even enjoying math, even higher math. I believe that young girls are not encouraged in mathematical and science fields, so they grow up thinking that they don't like it.

Yes. Women mix with anything. I know of several very competent and even brilliant female mathematicians and physicists.

Why are there not as many around as men? Who knows? It could be the annoying application of relatively meaningless statistical characterizations ("um, gee, how are women and men different?"), or the intrinsic ridiculousness of academia.

For some time only dated mathematician ladies. And am now married to one. So, do they mix, yes. But I do think they are not as enthusiastic about it in general. For example, women have gone in a generation from 10% to nearly 60% of doctors, but still are barely registering among mathematicians. ...because of their own choice.

Yes,
And what makes you think that women don't do 'higher' math? Incidentally, 2+2 could equal anything from 3 to 5 depending on how you define its 'twoness'. Spend some time figuring that one out....

Just a little math from a WOMAN

p.s. we women in my calculus classes did better than the boys, and we didn't need another student to tutor us... open your eyes a little wider and look farther.

of course they do. i had two maths teachers and i asked a question to the male one he didin't know the answer but the female one knew it and it was really a hard question. and i don't maen that females know math better, it is not about you are female or male, it depends on your brain!!! what a stupid question!!!

of course women and math mix, we do know how to shop.

no seriously, they do match, there are many women working in math fields, like accounting.
