Poetry is actually only enjoyed by those with open minds, these people enjoy seeing the world around them through the eyes of another person. We all have our on perspective on life and it's many wonders. I enjoy poetry because it brings about thought, perhaps by seeing things through other's eyes, we can more readily accept the fact that we are all individuals. The flow of the words works like a tune to a song, making it simpler to relate to and keep in mind. How many people see a mountain, and how many see a majestic moutain, surrounded by pale blue skies and covered with towering pines, that sing in the breeze of a warm summer's night?

While poetry doesn't occupy the same artistic prominense in popular culture that it did a long time ago, it remains one an effective form of artistic expression. Even if individual poets or works of poetry are not considered proximately relevant to modern events or society, the effects of IDEAS are exponential. Insofar as modern poetry only reaches to upper tiers of acedemia, the ideas confered are passed on to other, impressionable minds, and find there effects nevertheless in culture and society. Assuming the validity of chaos theory and sensitivity to initial conditions, I think it's safe to say that poetry remains relevent, even if you or I are not able to name a single contemporary poet.

Poetry is an art. Like a painting, the poet uses words instead of color and design. Unfortunately, the academia killed poetry in the 20th Century, namely TS Eliot. It was decided by the universities that poetry should be analysized instead of enjoyed. Instead of taking in the words, the universities said we had to break down the poem to find somekind of inner logic. That's what killed the art form. That aside, poetry is usually read at a presidential auguration, and by other poets. In other words, very little praticality in those charming words strung together.

As a poet I can tell you these things. First is that the first answer you got is wrong. I have a 360 site and am linked to many poets.
Poetry is a form of self expression, it is art. It is also a way to share your deepest emotions. It's a way to express love, hate, fear among other things. It can be silly and make us laugh. Many songs began as a poem.
However, like anything else it has to have the right audience.

What doesn't it contribute? It takes a facile, introspective mind to write good poetry. This leads to a way of looking at things that reveals hitherto hidden things.
