There is one reference to a person by the name of Lindon.
"Lindon also claimed to have invented the rugby ball but did not patent the idea." [1]

There are many refering to William Gilbert:
"William Gilbert had a boot and shoe makers shop next to Rugby school and started making balls for the school out of hand stiched leather casings and real pigs bladders." [2a]
"Bootmaker to Rugby school William Gilbert used his leather to encase freshly-harvested pigs' bladders" [2b]
"It was early in the 18th century that Mr. Gilbert, then a craftsman in leather, established a shoe and bootmaking business. Having established an impressive reputation in the business, Mr. Gilbert was subsequently asked to produce the first form of Rugby Ball for the pioneering sport in 1823" [2c]

Yeah its a different shape but the same principle applies to kicking a football, use the side of the foot or the top of the foot, for distance or say kicking at an angle.

SO does that mean that you also cant kick a football, cuz they are basically the same shape. A rugby ball is kicked like a football genius
