I'll assume that you have an overdrive transmission. Th700R4 (4L60) is the model. These transmissions are common for burning up the 3-4 clutch pack. When this clutch pack fails, it will feel like the transmission went into neutral when the shift to 3rd happens. Only fix it a rebuilt transmission.

Well I can tell you this check your transmission. I went to a well known car repair places to get a tune up and a oil change because it was well overdue. The engine light wasn't on. Anyway about three days later my transmission did just as your is except it would only get to 25. But Good Luck. Oh by the way I have a 1998 Cevy Blazer with only 110,000 miles.

Serious problem. Time for a trannie overhaul probably. What's your transmission fluid looking like? At that age for your vehicle, with normal usage, nearly everything's set to go. Luckily, used parts are plentiful.
