Yes indeed. Recurrent ear infections is a very common cause of hearing loss in a child.

When an ear infection causes fluid build up behind the ear, then the drum will not work and a child may not be able to hear out of that ear until the fluid goes away or the drum bursts.

If the drum bursts, then the fluid can leak out through a hole in the drum. HOWEVER this hole will heal up with a scar and many scars on the ear drum will make it less mobile. The child will have poor hearing in this instance.

If your child is having many ear infections, get your doctor to check him/her because they can be referred to an ENT specialist (otorhinolaryngologist). The ENT specialist can put a small plastic tube (a "grommet") in the child's ear and this can prevent buildup of fluid for some months.

The ENT surgeons are able to choose the spot in the ear drum that doesn't move so much and so it doesn't affect hearing if you make a hole there.

The ear infections tend to burst the drum any which place - usually at the weakest spot - not necessarily the right spot.

yes they can cause hearing loss if let go for to long. He may just need his ear cleaned out because he is producing to much ear wax, my husband has always had a problem with this ever since he was a baby. Take him to the doc and see what they can do, he could possibly need tubes in his ears.

Yes, I myself have had ear infections since I was like 2, and I got tubes. They fall out alot, but your son may need them to help with his ear infections. the ear infections/other things caused my hearing to drop down alot, with out my hearing aids I can only hear 110 decabells and over. I suggust you get them checked out

Yes, absolutely. You must have your child seen by a proper doctor as soon as you can to make sure no further damage is occurring.

yes they can depending on the severity of it. I lost some of my hearing due to one about a year back, be very cautious when it comes to kids.
