Libertarians are basically good for taking votes away from the social nanny parties, but both Republican and Democrats want to nanny over SOMETHING or another socially (as opposed to economically).
Independent, maybe, but are we talking the party that calls itself Independent or just an indie (self-funded) candidate? If someone rich enough campaigns, maybe.
In this next election, VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY! No matter what you are, re-register Democrat for this election only, because neocons must go down or else we're doomed, but Democrats have a way of picking the sleaziest possible candidate....just like Americans have a way of picking the sleaziest possible president.....*sigh*

Not really. In almost all states, you have to win a majority of the popular vote to get the state's electoral votes. With the all-or-nothing system in place in most states and the country being so polarized, it's nearly impossible for an independent or third-party candidate to get any electoral votes. Consider that Ross Perot had nearly 20% of the popular vote in '92, but not a single electoral vote.
In order to "bring another party to the table", so to speak, some reform of the Electoral College would be necessary. Check out this question for a few ideas on how to do that:

I certainly hope so. It might take another 20 years but it will happen. If i read my tea leaves correctly, it will happen soon after the democratic party finally collapses after losing another couple of election cycles. The Libertarians will then move into the number 2 position.

I dont believe so. If the democrats produce a halfway decent cantidate this time around Ill vote democrat. If it is another Kerry / Bush election ill vote for the libertarian just because I want none of the above.

Slim to none, they don't have the name recognition or the money to get their candidates that way. Also there aren't many celebrities or news organizations that have an interest in supporting them.

Only if there aren't any electronic voting boxes around. Unless your name is Joe Lieberman he will probably get elected. Sigh.....
