A generation is a subdivision of the genealogy of a family. Let's say we start with anyone within the family and call him No 1. The generation starts the day he is born and ends with the day he dies. During his life we assume he has children. They are the next generation and their lives will overlap with his. They also Will have children whose lives will overlap with grandfather's and parents. They too will have children and so on. The length of a generation is variable but on the assumption that the average lifespan is 75 years then that's the length of a generation. However we mustn't forget the overlapping effect so my father's generation started in 1917 when he was born. Mine started in 1947 when I was born, my son's in 1980 when he was born and so on.

Your granparents are a generation, your mom & dad are the next generation, then it's your generation, and then your kids generation is next and so on, there's no exact time.
