Yep it is. I heard that the reason is to help keep everyone around you in sync or something like that. Like if you're sitting around with your family watching tv, one person yawns, it has the domino effect and everyone in the room is yawning. That way everyone pretty much goes to bed around the same time.

yes, physically speaking, this occurs because a person yawns in order to equalize the pressure in their inner ear. however, when a person yawns in the vicinity of another person, the second person's pressure is altered while the first person's is equalized. therefore, the second person then yawns in order to equalize their own inner ear. interesting fact, i think.
