I don't know how to spell it but it sounds like this vee-jill or something like that.

What does it mean in english?

Yes, it could mean "survived" (выжил) , but also (I think) it could mean "saw it" (видел). The difference is that if in Vee-jill "j" is like "s" in "illusion" ,it means "survived". And if "j" is like "d" in "study" , that means "saw it"....

I think CBETA is correct. "Vyzhil" is more appropriate transliteration.
